What mailboxes does Mail use for keep messages on server

I use the IMAP protocol so that I can check my messages on multiple machines and access my email at work via Webmail.

Normally this works great, but on occasion, a message or two will go missing. Often because I forgot to close Mail on one of my machines and Mail has flagged the message as Junk and moved it to the Junk mailbox, thus removing it from the server.

In an attempt to resolve this, I tried checking the 'keep junk on server' checkbox to see if I liked this behavior. I was able to save the settings and all, but when I tried to mark a message as junk that had gotten past Mail's junk filter, I got a message about the folder for Junk not existing on my IMAP server.

I tried creating a folder called Junk via webmail for Mail.app to use, but it just kept giving me the same error message. (Webmail would only let me create the folder under my Inbox)

Does anyone know what folder(s) Mail wants to use when you click the 'keep mail on server' checkboxes? Can it be changed in the preferences? What ever happened to the 'Use mailbox for ...' option?

Thanks in advance.

I think it's the corresponding folder, for messages that have been sorted on the mail server. So, for example mail in the imap folder "RolexViagraEnlargment" will stay in that folder on the imap server.

In other words, what folder mail goes into would be setup on your imap server.

For me, drafts go in "Drafts" on the imap server I think. Sent mail goes in "Sent", but I think you can select which folder that goes into.

But, I can't use Mail.app anymore because it got stuck in a loop which I've tried and failed to break it out of.

I also want to know where stuff is saved, so I can try deleting my account and starting over. Meanwhile I'm using Thunderbird, changed to BCC me on all of my email, to get around the thunderbird bug where it sometimes fails to copy sent mail to the sent folder.

Arggh... apparently using BCC doesn't always work in Thunderbird now, in case this is of interest to anyone else. I just sent a very important email and got no BCC of the email!!! I can't ever lose email, this sucks.
