What the computer does when closed.

I want to set up my laptop so that when I am hooked up to an external monitor, I can close my MacBookPro without the computer going to sleep. My cats keep walking on it (grrr) so my only solution is to give up dual monitors. I thought I had seen a place that said something like "When closing the computer, I want the computer to do this" but I may be remembering my old pc.

I also will need to know how to put it back, obviously, for when I undock.

This is probably a really stupid questions, but my frustration level is peaked this afternoon. Thank you!
 
Yes I do... I have a usb mouse and bluetooth keyboard. I just tried it and it didn't work, then I re-opened my computer and the monitor came on, but not the lap top screen so I re-closed it and it WORKED!!! I'm not sure why, but it did... Thank you!!

I had looked around that support page for an answer, but evidently didn't have the correct verbiage.. Again.. Thanks.
