I have a serious problem

Hardware: cube 450 1.5gb ram, 70gb hdd (2=partitions)
software: panther latest

There is some strangeness going on. The facts..

it Was running fine for 2 years, I use it almost exclusively for my mail server (communigate)

Did a security update (two updates ago I beleive) and when it rebooted it wanted to go into a non working partition on a firewrire drive (the partitions would work if CCC worked with panther). SO I rebooted holding the option key and selceted the correct target. Seemed fine.. Then once it was up I went inside startup disk and ensured the correct drive was selected.

Fast forward to the last update.

Installed update and came time to reboot..It almost boots ok but then hangs at "starting Apple File Services". It hangs here for about 4 mins.. and then an install screen pops up wanting me to put the second disc in. So i do. It says processing essential software/running installer script but NEVER finishes.... ever.

Also, I can no longer boot with the option button to select a target.

The weird thing is , even while it's hung at the installer script, my mail server works fine. But I cant do anything else.

I need this fixed and preferably without re installing the OS from scratch because unfortunately I cant ssh into to get my mail config files.

Maybe zapping some pram or something to allow me to use the boot with option key pressed...I dont know????

Thanks,

calvin

It sounds like Mac OS X is having trouble identifying the true startup disk/partition. I've had this problem before, and I solved it by fiddling with the jumpers on the drive -- I'm assuming that your hard drive is not the factory hard drive, right?

Check the jumpers of the hard drive -- make sure they're set to "Master." A long shot, but it just might work...
