What the heck?

Hi all, thanks for readin this. As you see in my sig, I have an iMac 700, which has worked perfectly.

But, just a couple of minutes ago, I received an error message saying that I don't have enough memory left, and that I should immediately quit some apps, or otherwise the mac would get problems.

So I restarted, and now everything is at least twice as slow! What's up?

Yeah I've had a similar message appear a few random times. It's bogus as far as my experience; since I've got 786 RAM and wasn't running even close to the max. You can check your memory usage with top in the Terminal.

Of course if you were running Classic emulation that's a different story, you may need to allocate more memory to whatever app was griping at you. But it doesn't sound like that sort of error message from your description...

Also, the reason your system seems slow after restart is that you don't have anything in the system cache. I experience the same slowdown (starting apps, accessing files) after a restart, which is why I never restart. Your system should return to normal once the cache fills up.

At least, I'm assuming the cache is the reason for your slowdown. See my sig for my configs...

Well I've got 786 MB too, but I was running Classic, as you said. Although I haven't had this message earlier. Oh well, thanks for sharing. :)
