I read about 20 different articles on the subject and all seem to agree that this could be the beginning of the salvation of the music industry. Apple has a year (the length of the contract with the five companies) to prove the worth of its iTunes Music Store. Man, I hope that it works and that Apple is able to retain control.
 
I like this. It's actually the most obvious solution to digital music. I was thinking that Apple should license their store to Microsoft, then lower the price from iTunes to 80¢/song and charge $1 even through Windows Media Player, but if they release iTunes for Windows, that's probably better. It's a superior music player (simpler, cleaner interface, better visuals, easier to figure out, nifty hidden features), and this way Apple can keep all the revenue.
