when your hd breaks...

the other day I was computing when I shut down my computer.
I start the thing up later in the day and it cant recognize my hard drive! im gonna find my os x install cd ( 10.0 I think... .1 mabye ) but then what should I do? try to repair the hd? is there any way I can recover the files?

When I start it up I get a flashing ? in a grey disk on the center of my screen. It happened once to me awhile ago and I remember it was because the hd was goofed up... I was wondering possible causes/problems and solutions

Insert the OS CD and start up (or restart) and immediately hold down the C key. Now the computer will start up on the CD.

Locate the utility folder and in there Disk Utility. Run it and let it repair.

I had that, never with X though, i remember losing my system folder 9 countless times. Norton normally worked for me, but often I did have to drag the data to another partition or drive.
