When your new iMac sleeps?

I read somewhere the it is good to let the LCD on your iMac go into sleep mode, to give it a longer life. However say im exporting and iMove to quicktime and its longer then the max amount of time before the iMac goes to sleep, if it goes to sleep while im exporting it simply stalls and does not accomplish anything unless I wake it up. My question to you is this how imortant is this sleep feature anyway? Will my iMac LCD really live a much shorter life, If I dont let it sleep when I am not actively using it? On another note I am not concerned about preserving power in my house, im not trying to save energy.

Letting the computer goe to sleep will be an energy saver and prevent the screen from staying lit forever when you walk away from your computer, but it will also wake up faster than if you shut down, then two hours later, started it up again.

When you are doing a major job such as exporting a movie, go to the Control Panels>Energy Saver and switch it to never before you start the work. This will prevent stalls and let the process proceed without interruption. When you are done, just remember to reset the Energy Control panel to what you are comfortable with.

Unless you need a nightlight in the room where the computer is, you should either let it sleep after 15 minutes of no activity or shut it down.

Cheryl thank you for the information, and welcome to Macosx.com however I am already aware of what you have said, my question is am I shortening my iMacs life span by not turning on energy saver and am I jepordizing the longevity of my LCD by not allowing it to sleep?

yes, that's what cheryl wanted to say. the lcd screen will live much longer if you allow it to sleep, however you can also set the display to fall asleep without the whole system doing the same thing. so maybe you want to set your computer's sleep time to 'never', while you'll set your display's sleep time to 20 or 30 minutes.

If want to leave the Mac on but want to spare the LCD (before it gets dead pixels) just use a screen saver which is all black. I heard it should help, I don't use it though (my Mac runs 24/7) since it is not sure that it actually shortens the lifetime of your TFT. On ArsTechnica, I also red that it is the other way round. But if you want to keep your Mac running and want to prevent the transistors from your LCD to operate, just run a black screen saver. If an LCD display should display black, it just doesn't provide power to the red, green and blue transistors of the pixels.

Ahhh, thank you all, very, very usefull information. I think I will just turn the LCD to a sleep mode, and leave the system sleep mode on never.
