Where is a good start for me?

I've been coding with javascript, actionscript(flash), php, and a little applescript for a long time now, but I would love to make some simple standalone stuff - like for text-transformations, or scripted terminal actions (if that can be done)

I'm initially attracted to the idea of AppleScript Studio, but it seems strangely missing from my developer tools download. Is there a lower-level language I should get into, seeing that I'm comfortably experienced with Object-oriented scripters, or should I keep looking into AppleScript? (PS: Im not interested in buying RealBasic)

Look on the Applescript material they have on Apple's site. It's rather good. (Of course, depends on what you will do with it..)
