Whirring noise coming from powerbook

ok, recently I've noticed that my powerbook makes a rather loud whirring noise. I mean this is noticeable.

I can have music on average volume and it won't drown out the whirring.

Also it comes and goes. I thought it was the fan, because I know the speed of the fan changes, depending on the processor, and how much it is working.

I just thought the fan may have been dislodged or something. I haven't dropped the powerbook.

Could it be the hard disk? It reallly is annoying.

Thanks.

Three items in your 12" PowerBook would make a 'whirring' noise
the Fan (noise would be in top row center area of keyboard)
The Hard Drive (under the left palm rest)
the CD drive (right end of the keyboard). Eject any disk, noise should be gone

Have you recently upgraded to 10.3.5 ?

If so it may well be the fan. The 10.3.5 update lowered both the temperature the fan comes on and the temperature the speed it increases speed on all 12" powerbooks. When my powerbook is on mains supply, the fan goes much more than it used to. It's annoying especially when mine was not one of the 'superhot' 12" before the update.

It is possible to reverse the temperature settings to the pre-10.3.5 ones. Sorry, I don't have the link that tells you how but if you search google then you should find it easily.

I don't have the fan coming on a lot on my Powerbook. I've set the CPU speed to automatic though, so that might be the cause. If I set it to highest, the fan comes on more frequently.
