Why is my sound gone?!

Well I just restarted after *correctly* deleting an admin user, (not root), and now every sound in OS X.2.4 is gone! If I start a song in iTunes, it won't start, it just hangs at 0:00, and if I go to System Prefs and sound, the demo mode of the sounds won't let me hear anything, and the volume bars are greyed out. (See attachment).

Useful info: the sound works as normal in 9!

Whoa please help me!

Whoa what the &*^&?! I was using Techtool Deluxe, because my system was behaving funny, now all of the sudden the screen went grey, like a grey curtain fell from the above, that times 3. Then that times 3 but black. And now it's like normal. What the hell was that?

By any chance where you using M$ office? Sometimes my system stops using sounds when using Office. And it requires me to reboot.

If you're still having problems with sound, you probably need to run Disk Utility and run a Verification/Repair of disk permissions (Under the First Aid tab). It could be that there are still some files hanging around that belong to the deleted user that have permissions such that no current users can access them.

I've run into similar issues with Linux in the past that prevent sound working. Unfortunately, Linux doesn't have the self-repair facilities to correct that; MacOSX does. :)

I did a clean install over my previous X, and the sound works again!:D ;)
