Why Is My System Sooooo Sloooow!

My powerbook used to be pretty responsive. When it would bog down,..I would back up important info, wipe my drive and reinstall from a custom disk image. Only thing is, now my system has evolved considerabley since I last made a restore image and my system is so sluggish. from the login screen it takes well over 3 minutes for my desktop to finish. I get the spinning ball a lot now.

Are there any reliable methods for optimizing a sluggish system? Or do I have to just face the fact that I have a lot of backing up to do followed by hours and hours of installs?

Suggestions? Tips?

You might try something like Onyx or MacJanitor to clean up a bunch of extra junk that can build up over time.

it's worth a try at least. I see some gains from doing that.
