Windows USB hard-disk with Mac Os X

My friend came over the other day and he wants to copy some pictures off me
He then connects his Windows-formatted USB hard disk to my mac. However, I could only "read" the things inside but not "write" anything on it.
The hard disk works perfectly on a Windows machine.

Is there anyway to change the "format" of the hard disk without formatting it?

Your friends disc is formatted as NTFS, read only. You would have to format it as Fat32 to have Read/Write access from the Mac.
