Wireless print server problem

Hi,

I am running Tiger and have a Netgear FM114P router/print server, with which I have successfully connected wirelessly to the internet. I am trying to set up my HP laserjet 3015 to print remotely/wirelessly. I know that this is possible as I somehow managed to fluke the 3015 printing something wirelessly a few weeks ago (I don't know how!), but have not been able to replicate this since.

I also have other printers successfully connected by USB. And I have successfully connected another HP printer by the print server in the past (but not under Tiger).

I have tried adding the 3015 in the Printer Setup Utility, both with the 'more printers' option in the default browser, and also in the IP browser using IPP and LPD options. I have tried adding the printer with IP address 192.168.0.1 and also with 192.168.0.101 (as I thought .1 might just look for the computer), both times selecting Print using HP and then 3015 at the bottom of the dialogue box.

The printer seems to add OK, but then when I try to print, it always times out with no response.

I then tried connecting an ethernet cable from the router to my Mac and tried again to add the printer, hoping it might automatically recognise it, but to no avail.

I tried installing the additional HP printer drivers from the Tiger DVD, but also no success.

Lastly, I tried looking at the HP website to download the drivers for 3015, but could only seem to find the drivers for up to OS 10.3.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mono

Time to read the manual!

OS X has three TCP/IP protocols (called IP printing): LPD, IPP and HP Jetdirect (called TCP/IP raw or port 9100 in some manuals). The first two of these, LPD and IPP, also require a device queue name as part of the address that gets data to the printer. Whatever OS X uses for "default" only works 2 % of the time. Search the router/print server manual for the queue name. OR, if the print server supports HP Jetdirect, use that.

Thanks for that. I have tried reading the Netgear manual before now but it's not very helpful (very brief and mainly OS9-focussed - doesn't even mention Printer Setup Utility, but rather just Desktop Printing).

I think you might be on the right wavelength in terms of what I'm doing wrong, as I had named the queue something arbitrary myself. I have now left it blank (the printer setup utility says, 'Leave blank for default queue' and in the absence of an actual queue name in the manual, I'm not sure what else to put).

I have now tried this with IPP, LPD and HP JetDirect but it still doesn't work.

Do I need to plug back in directly by ethernet to start setting it up?

Also, can you advise whether I'm on the right track with assigning the IP address as 192.168.0.101 rather than 192.168.0.1 or doesn't that matter?

Incidentally, with one of the printer configurations when I try to set it up and print, it says that it's attempting to connect to host 192.168.0.1 by port 9100 - on the other it says it's by port 631. Which is correct? (9100?)

Thanks for your help! Any other ideas?

Cheers,
Mono

From googling (FM114P), I see the queue name for the first printer is L1 (el-one) and for the second printer it's L2. It looks like only the LPD protocol is supported.

port 9100 = HP Jetdirect protocol
port 631 = Internet Printing Protocol (IPP)
port 515 = Line Printer Daemon (LPD)

The correct IP address to use is the IP address of the router.

PS - OS 9 Desktop Printer Utility also required a queue name - it used the LPD protocol.
