Wireless sniffers

If you've ever used Kismet for Linux, then you know what I'm looking for: a simple program that can put an Airport card into monitor mode and detect all ambient networks. Is there anything like this for OS X/Darwin?

I'm sure there is...I saw a man at the 10.2 release on his iBook 12inch with a program running like that =/ I couldn't get out of line to ask him what program it was though.

... but yet no one knows how to put airport cards into monitor (promiscous) mode. I've been searching the web for month on this topic, but nothing turned up.
MacStumbler just sends out requests for open Basestations (so says the manual) , but closed networks by definition won't answer to those requests.

MacStumbler is a good tool, but still it's no promiscous mode :-(

Sorry.

btw: I'm thinking about obtaining an additional PCMCIA-WLAN-Card, most likely a Lucent Orinocco, for monitoring purposes. Has anyone already done this and used tools like AirSnort or Etheral under OSX ?

have fun !

Rats! No promiscuous mode. Oh well. I'll just have to stick to the Zaurus for all my espionage needs.

seeing that you have an iBook...Let me ask you a question. How much ram do you have and does os 10.2 eat all your memory up? I'm having an issue with memory just slowly leaking away from os 10.2, i upgraded from 10.1 and i'm wondering if that could possibly be the cause of my memory problems. I have 384mb of ram =/

My iBook has the same amount of RAM, but I've got a clean installation of 10.2 (not entirely by choice - stupid bad sectors.) Memory hasn't been a problem so far, so if you're having any troubles, I would suspect the upgrade.
