Wireless without base station

Hello,
I've been trying to figure out how to protect my powerbook which I have put on a wireless network using Roadrunner's cable modem which is connected to a Belkin Wireless g router (which is what my powerbook's airport extreme card is connecting to wirelessly). But the Airport Admin Utility will not recognize that base station, I guess since it's not Apple. can anyone tell me how I can set a password so others cannot log in to this network or so my computer's safety and privacy won't be compromised? Thank you so much!!

what you are looking for is called WEP encryption. there should be an IP adress you can enter into your browser that will take tyou to the routers GUI. from there, find security, and choose at least 128 bit wep encryption. write down the key, and enter it into your network properties on your powerbook. you also might want to enable MAC encryption. you will find it in the same place. find the MAC adress for all of your computers and add them to the allowed list. good luck

To add to what Dan said, you have to sign-in to your Belkin router through a web browser. Typically the address is http://192.168.1.1. Once you are there the web-based software of your router will allow you to set WEP encryption and security prefs for your router so only you can use its signal.

Once you sign on for the first time you shouldn't have to re-enter the WEP encryption key unless you try to log onto your network with another computer besides the one you set up.

If 192.168.1.1 failed try 192.168.0.1 which is also very typical.
However, you should maybe edit your subject. It sounds as if you want to use a wireless lan network without an access point. This is possible and I was close to not read your post and others and simply tell about the ad hoc networking. ;)
Anyway, welcome to the forum. :)

Hello everyone, thank you so much for your words of advice. My problem is I am such a neophyte that I don't even know where to begin to follow your instructions. Can someone say it in language meant for someone who doesn't know much at all? I tried to type in the 192.168.1.1 and the other address into Safari and Internet Explorer but nothing happened. Is that what I was supposed to do?
Thanks again, and sorry to be a pain!

plaid, you should check the manual from your netgear router or simply tell us, what is written on the router.
Typing the ip 192.168.0.1 (did you try this one?) should lead you to the software of the netgear router where you can activate the options WEP and MAC-filters. But before you can do that, you will first need to successfully access your router software.

But first make sure that you have set your IP address to 192.168.1.* or 192.168.0.* Otherwise you will not see the router.
