with appl download comes device not configured

recently for more than half of my application downloads when I try to open them after downloading I get a window saying device not configured, and the and the disk symbol is not being unpacked, and the installer does not open.
This is for applications like skype for mac, quicktime extensions etx.
anybody has an idea?

I'd try deleting com.apple.bomarchivehelper.plist and any apple plists with disk image or installer in the name and restarting, as a first step.
