won't boot up - common?

I just got a free iMAc G3 (summer) and I have a few issues.

1) When I turn it on a folder appears and in it it blinks a question mark and a face? It was workin fine yesterday. Any suggestions?

2) It makes a crazy sound the moment I turn it on, like "ga ga ga ga ga" is this the disk? Am I as screwed as I believe I am?

I'm running OS 9.1 and would like to install my panther program, anything responses would be helpful.

It sounds like there might be a problem with the drive, either a missing pointer to the startup volume or a physical problem. Do you have a Mac OS system CD you can boot from? If so, use the Disk Utility app on the CD to examine your drive.

To boot from a CD, hold down the "C" key after you hear the startup chime. Hold the key down until you see the computer starting up (i.e., getting past the problem you're seeing now). If this doesn't work, post an update to this thread.

Holding down "c" doesn't do anything. Any other suggestions. I still have a folder blinking with the mac face (of doom) and a question mark. I'm lost

I agree with an earlier post.. sounds like something is remiss with your CD ROM drive or disk themselves.

Can you boot into single user mode? Hold down the Option S key? If you can, then try hte FSCK -y command.
