won't print suddenly, 10.1.4

Imac 500 mhz running 10.1.4 and Epson stylus 880 working fine for over a year, suddenly unable to print! Have run printer check to rule out problem with the printer itself, have checked cables and power connections. Have tried printing from Mail and from Appleworks. From Mail, get message: "error while printing" but no printer sounds or queues (In Console, it shows error: Mail[366] PMSessionEndDocumentNoDialog failed (error code = -9640). From Appleworks, don't get error message but doesn't print. In both cases, can watch "spooling" progress bars as usual.
Other things I have tried: checked for queues (but never are any), deleted printing preferences, deleted printers (several times), deleted "printing" folder while logged in as root user (/var/spool/printing). I am NOT running Classic when I try to print. Cannot easily reinstall system software as the full-install disk is for 10.0x... Could install 10.2 if necessary (I have it on a FW drive), but don't want to create more problems with archiving apps.
Any thing else I can try short of reinstalling OS?

I have that from time to time and normally it is solved by deleting the printer and putting it back.

I also found out that printing from the toolsbar in Word doesn't work, but printing from the file menu is ok.

Any finally sometime I have weired errors just because the selected paper size is not available....
 
I wish I could fix it as easily! I have tried deleting the printer several times and it doesn't matter if I try to print from the File menu or a toolbar-- it just won't print.
Any other ideas??
 
Did you try to run again the 10.1.4 updater ?
Or tried the 10.1.5 ?
 
You mean, I can run the 10.1.4 updater as a kind of reinstall? I can certainly try that, though it won't be until much later today as I have to go to work!

An update for all you trying to help!
I determined that I can still print in 9.2.1 (on same partition) and I can print in 10.2 (yes, I have that installed but on a partition of my FW drive as I cannot run a few programs with it yet).
I installed 10.03, then 10.1 updater and update combo to 10.1.5 on another partition of my FW drive, and I can print from that also! Ran Carbon Copy cloner to copy the system, library and other required files to my imac disk, making it bootable and blessing the system folder. Had to restore some prefs, but otherwise running OK. However, I still canNOT print, and I am running 10.1.5, too.
This has me mystified. What files need to be replaced that I have not replaced?

Could my copy of Print Center have become corrupt? It doesn't appear as it should on the dock after I have hit "print" and the progress bar shows the doc being prepared for printing. How do I copy it from my newly installed 10.1.5 on the FW drive when it tells me that one or more items cannot be copied?
