I have been using OS X software on an older computer and recently I have been having problems with it. When I turn the computer on it usually shows a folder with a question mark and then the apple symbol. Sometimes it doesn't get any farther than that. Something the grey screen with the big apple comes up and it gets to the desktop. I have not been able to get any farther than the desktop (opening folders, applications, ect.) I read that I should unplug the computer for 5mins and try again. No luck. I have cleaned dust out of the computer. No luck. The more times I try in one sitting, the less I get back. The first time turning the computer on, it will get to the desktop usually. The second time, the grey screen. The third time, as soon as the folder with the question mark pops up, nothing happens. I restart the computer and fail to get anywhere. I do not know much able fixing problems, so hopefully you will be able to help. Thanks!

Have you tried booting in single user mode by holding;
+ command (apple button) and s
while starting up.

next type;

sbin/mount -uw /

then;

fsck -y

If it says it was modified
do this again;

fsck -y

when finished type;

reboot

it sounds like a hard drive issue. it might be on it's deathbed. can you hear a lot of clicking when you turn on the computer?
