won't wake out of sleep mode

i have an 80G dual processor mirrored door drive G4 with 10.4.6. i recently bought some new ram (recommended by ramjet.com) to upgrade to 1.75 GB DDR SDRAM. the box said it was pc3200 ram, but my system profiler sees it as pc2600.
now when i put my computer to sleep and try to wake it, it sounds like something is trying to boot up but it never wakes up. my hub doesn't light up, no display, nothing. i've tried force quitting and zapping the PRAM, repairing the disk permissions, and it still does it every time. help! what do i do?

Does it wake up normally when you don't have all that extra RAM added there?
Does it occur when some programs are running, or no matter which programs are running?

The first thing you should do is to verify the problem by removing the new RAM and checking for the problem.

The next thing you should do is check with the place where you installed it, or with ramjet.com. If you've verified that the RAM is the problem, you should return it -- a functioning, compatible RAM chip will never cause these problems.

See here for more info.

1. no, this problem didn't occur until after i installed the new ram.
2. it doesn't matter which programs are open and running—sometimes only mac mail and it still does it, but only sometimes now.
3. of course i checked the ram individually. my system profiler says that both 512 chips are okay. my machine only does this when BOTH new chips are installed.
i'm sondering if it's a PC2600 thing. the box they came in says PC3200, and that's what i thought i was getting. everything says that the chips are PC3200 EXCEPT my system profiler. it does says that they are both okay though.
?????

My $0.02 on this issue: memory is cheap these days, even good memory. So if you get RAM that causes problems, return it and buy from somewhere else. It's less expensive, in terms of your own time, than wrestling with whatever issue you're having here. I've bought all my Apple memory from macsales.com for six or seven years now and have never had a problem.

why would the ram be labeled and sold as PC3200 but my mac read it as being PC2600? no one has addressed that issue. My only conclusion would be that it was mislabeled at the manufacturing level, but I don't know how likely that is.

It's quite possible. Where did you purchase this RAM from? Remember that OS X is very picky about RAM. It's best to go with what you see on ramseeker.com.

My recommendations are Crucial, Kingston, Corsair, and any other top-quality RAM that's out there. Just don't buy it from Apple...it's too expensive from there. :)

In answer to your question: I've never bought anything from ramjet.com. In the past 6-7 years, I've used MemoryX and OWC (macsales.com), and never had a problem with any Apple machine.

Bummer! Brand-name memory from a brand-name store. Well, you could always try returning it there and getting a replacement.

I have the MDD dual 1GHZ. I have the same problem. However mine is related to the upgraded DVD-R/W drives and the USB 2.0 card I have installed.

I do remember having trouble with my RAM when I bought 2 512mb sticks from MemoryX.com. However the trouble I had was related to the original 256mb stick that came with my machine. When removed the system ran perfectly on the 1GB.

More than a year later I tried the 256mb stick again and it works fine now that I never put my system to sleep nor do I allow it to go to sleep thanks to my other upgrades. If I did it would never wake up, that is without a swift kick in the power button.

My advice: This model, while being a great machine, has some serious issues when it comes to hardware upgrades and sleep. Try returning the RAM if you can and see how the new sticks work. Otherwise you can choose to live without putting your computer to sleep, which is what I have done.

Edit: As for the PC 3200 showing up as 2600, I believe this machine does this to all sticks no matter what version they are. The RAM is backwards compatible and this computer takes PC 2600, so it sees all sticks that it can recognize as PC 2600

NICE! thanks dixon for the input. that makes since with the recognition issue. i have since returned the ram (it was kingston though), and just went with 1 512 stick of corsair (stil PC3200) instead of 2 . it also reads ad PC2600, but at 1.25G I'm flying through everything and sleep mode is no longer an issue. It sucks that you have to go without it though-I don't think I could.
