Word 2001 in Jaguar

Anyone noticed the following:

Word 2001 in Jaguar (classic mode) is unable to edit and save back to disk documents on a AppleShare volume (shared folder). If I open a Word document on a shared folder, edit it and try to save it back to disk an error that "too many files are open" appears. After clicking okay at the error prompt, the file is renamed "Word Work File". If I close this file without saving it, the original file is removed from disk (actually the Word Work File can be found in the Temporary Items folder in the shared folder).

I've had similar problems with saving Word documents back to a shared folders in the past but that was usually becuase a user didn't have write access to the Temporary Items folder in the shared folder. I've verified write access to this folder and still get the error message.

Hmm, if it's in shared volume, copy it over to HD and edit, then save on HD, copy to shared volume...

Off-topic slightly: on spring 2001 I attended a media workshop, and once we started wondering why on earth the LAN was so dratted slow...the reason: One of the dudes was editing a rather huge photoshop file over network...
