i'm having a LOT of trouble with word on my new mac. i've been trying to figure out how to insert chinese characters into my word documents. i've figured out how do insert them in all other programs other than word, but when i try to use it in word, i type in the pinyin, the characters show up, i choose the apprepriate character, but when it is inserted into the text, it is not the right symbol. its usually inserted as an apple symbol or little boxes or lines.
i have the new version of word and mac so i dont understand why this is happening. i'm pulling out my hair trying to figure it out!

please help!!!

Oh, I don't know. Perhaps you should try a font with Chinese characters. Apple includes a nice selection of fonts with Chinese characters. Their names end in "CY," such as Times CY.

Make sure you actually have Chinese language support loaded. It is in the "extras" folder if you boot on your Installation Disk--so you can add languages without having to reload the System.

I do not have mine, literally, on me. If these steps do not explicate it, I will post pickies when I get home. Let me know if you are 10.5 or 10.6.

I believe when you open the disk--not having booted on it--you can find them in "extras" and simply install them without booting on them. However, I will double check in an hour or so. :)

Check your language settings, however:

See that whether or not it is already installed but not activated.

And here is how you do it--I used my OS 10.5 disk, but it is the same process as with OS 10.6. You do not need to boot on the disk, and it does not matter that you have a higher OS--as in my case:

ok so i got that far but when i go click on the xcode, the "install options" doesn't come up like it did with yours. what happens is a screen comes up that says "custom install on macintosh HD"
then there are boxes with
essentials (checked)
system tools (checked)
UNIX dev support (checked)
documentation (checked)
mac OS x 10.4 support

those are my only options

its getting really frustrating. do u think there may be a problem with the Office i downloaded? because my chinese characters work everywhere else EXCEPT in word. when i try to type in a character, only other symbols appear (like a box, or a picture of an apple) and when the symbol appears the font in my word goes from my normal font, to "heiti TC light"
should i take off the word i'm using and install another (my boyfriend put the office program on here and i think he found a pirated source)
please help!! ahh!!

You clearly need a new boyfriend.

Yes . . . sorry . . . seriously, I get the SAME problem when I try to type in Japanese--Word often "changes" the font to something Korean. If you can wait a few hours, I will try to bother some of the Chinese students I know to see if they recommend a particular font/setting.

A particular dialect you need?
