i tried the following:

on login screen i entered >console as username to go to commandline
then i logged in as a user and did a sudo -s
i started xdm to have XFree
but i cannot login
it seems that xdm does not know my username or password
does anyone know a solution to this problem
because i would like to have the opportunity to use XFree without Aqua

xdm is a Login manager. You do not need a Login Manager in MacOS X since the System works better than any third-party Login manager would ever work with OS X.

If you wish to use multiple Desktop environments with MacOS X, try Customizing the Applications Menu of X11.app

hmm yes i know that xdm is a login manager ... but somehow apple added it ... because it is in /private/etc/X11/xdm

actually i will consider this as not too important that it works and try to configure my OpenBSD box to login there remotely via xdm from my powerbook ... to use the powerbook as a XTerminal with windowmanager on OpenBSD
i guess this should work since on the powerbook no xdm and authentication is involved afaik

i will start RTFM for this before i ask stupid questions :)

thanx for the advice anyway
