Redid my Powerbook G4 yesterday, and I'm having trouble reinstalling Xfree86.

When I "startx" from console mode, I get no errors, just

Display IOKit

and the spinning beach ball. I can type "exit" to return to the normal login prompt.

XDarwin reports that the XClient exited with status 1.

PATH is set correctly. I've tried just running X with XDarwin. X seems to be the problem.

Any direction would be much appreciated.

BTW, I installed XFree86 via the binaries from XFree86.org
 
OK, If I just install XFree86, I can get it working with:

startx -- -quartz -keymap USA.keymapping

Once I install XDarwin, it launches in rootless just fine using the same command line.

But I can't double click XDarwin App even though I have the keyboard mapping selected in preferences. It quits shortly after I select which mode on with full screen or rootless.

Sorry for this post. It seems to be a waste of time. I don't exactly know what happened, but this problem seems to have fixed itself. I made no changes to any files anywhere.

Maybe I can add some value. I can't guarantee that this will work for everybody, so try it at your own peril.

Once I got X working, I downloaded and installed the demo of Tenon's Xtools. It overwrites some of XFree's files, and adds the motif window manager. I then immediately deleted the Xtools application (don't delete the package, it trashed some system library files) by dragging it to the trash. I changed my xinitrc to launch "mwm" instead of "twm". I also noticed the following benefits:

1. When you drag a window, it drags full screen, not pasty update like XFree86.
2. Motif
3. twm itself is better too

FYI... use at your own risk.
