Yet another iPod Hassle

Total bummer, I have an original 5gb iPod that I bought the day it came out and it simply wont mount on my computer anymore. I hadnent plugged the thing into my computer for months and now it simply wont mount. It still charges with the computer connection as well as the stand alone charger which I useually use. Any ideas?

Reinstall the software, completely wipe the thing and then put your music back on it. If that doesn't work just call apple support and see if they can help you. Cross your fingers it isn't dead!

The problem could be due to either a malfunction with your computer or your iPod. Check iTunes to make sure you have configured it to mount on plug-in and everytihng. If you haven't plugged your iPod in a while you may have upgraded iTunes in the meantime.

First, hold down Menu and Play/Pause for a few seconds, until you see the Apple logo. This will reset the unit. Try attaching it.

If that fails, hold Menu & Play/Pause until it resets, then once the apple logo is displayed hold Next & Previous for a few seconds. This will put the iPod into FireWire target mode and should force-mount it.

If that fails, call Apple.

Well, sucks for me, Im calling apple tommarow I guess, its Ive allready tried eveything listed above... still just wondering why it happened to mine.

Have you updated your machine recently? You might have the 2.0 software for a 1.3-capable iPod.

arden- you couldn't accidentally upgrade your 1st gen iPod to 2.0 even if you tried- it won't let you.

heh, God knows, I tried anyway, just for the hell of it.

cogito you think that's bad: the only reason I know so much about the classic iPod is because after one month it died completely on me. I couldn't even get it to power on, it just showed me the checking disk animation and then a :( with Xs for eyes.

Apple replaced it.

Ah, the problem was with my computer, not the iPod, I reinstalled panther and bingo, the thing works fine... I have no Idea what was wrong... Agreed the first gen iPods are a little quirky. I want a dockable one badly.

ive had to reinstall my ipod multiple times, it gets really annoying, really fast :( and i have a 3g 30gb model

I have an original 5gb model and have never had a moments trouble with it. I use it 5-6 days a week for 2-9 hours a day.

I bought a 15gb 3G model and have had nothing but trouble with it. The button in the center of the "wheel" worked rarely and I had to "reinstall" the ipod software 5 times. I finally took it back to CompUSA and got a 20gb 3G. Hope this one is better.
