adjusting sound

I'm running a TiPowerbook 1Ghz with 512 MB ram and OS 10.3.3. I was wondering if there was a way to seperately adjust the sound/volume levels for different applications. One example is if I wanted to turn my speaker's volume up and I wanted iTunes loud but wanted, say the the "IM recieved" tone on iChat or AIM to still sound but be a little softer. Is there a way to adjust the different application volumes from the OS itself? Thanks.

Some applications allow you to setup the audio volume independantly of the overall volume. I know about iTunes, vlc, quicktime, icq (I think) and even ichatAV. Go to Preferences and pick alerts tab. You will see a volume control which is just affecting the ichat sounds. I think this option should be supported by the app and don't know about any tool does so to any other app..
