Best way to archive emails

I'm trying to clean up some space on my computer, and my emails are taking a lot of space (I save most of them, and have done so for 5+ years). My strategy was to make a Smart Folder, give the rule "Older than a date". Set the date for about 1.5years ago. This made a mailbox with about 67K+ emails. Then I selected all of them and deleted them. When I quit email it fails to quit and crashes instead and when I open the program again the emails are still in the Smart Mailbox.
Any thoughts on the best way to accomplish this? Perhaps a third-party program?

are you trying to delete the old mails?plus the smart mailbox?however you are unable to do so because it quits?
 
Yes. I made an archive of the smart folder, and now I'm just trying to delete all the emails in that folder, and the program seems to work for a bit, then when I try and quit, the program doesn't actually quit, it instead crashes.
