Catastrophe

My hard drive crashed last night. I have booted up from both my Software Intsall and Software Restore CD's that came with my Powerbook. I should note that when I boot up using the CD, I get a "This disk is unreadable by this Computer. Initialize?" I cancel, and launching Disk First Aid, recieve the following problems:

Invalid BTree Header, 0, 0 (twice)
MountCheck found serious errors
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair, 4, 314
Volume Header needs minor repair, 1, 0

I then receive the following message:
"Repairing the disk.
Unable to complete repairs. Try repairing the disk again. The volume "Hard Drive" could not be mounted."
Is this a lost cause?

No, I get this more often than I like. Disk First Aid is a pretty wimpy utility and cannot rebuild file systems like some paid software can.

It will, however, cost you some $$$ for these apps.

For use in Classic:
- Norton Utilities 6 (not earlier)
- Tech tool pro 3 (I think it's 3. The new one)
- Disk Warrior

Mac OS X app:
- Drive 10 (micromat.com)

These heavier duty utilities should be able to rebuild the file system on your drive.

Betcha wish you had one, eh?

I appreciate your help. I was able to download the Norton Utility trial on one of the lab Macs, connect to it while booting from my install CD, and use program linking to run it on my Powerbook. As far as I can tell, nothing was lost. Thanks again for your time.
