Connection Failed on logout

Users on our some of our Mac clients have started being unable to logout without power cycling the machine.

They get an error message 'Connection Failed' when they try to logout. Clicking OK just brings it back again. There is no indication which server or service is the problem. On the internet I've seen this described as 'The curse of Apple Connection Failed' but this applied to MobileMe/iDisk settings, which we haven't configured.

We have had Open Directory - Active Directory integration implemented for some time now and haven't seen the problem before. Users are logging authenticating against their AD account and the group they are in (staff or student) is managed in OD WGM. File stores are mounted by preferences in WGM.

We've recently moved file storage from Novell Netware 6.5 servers to Windows Server 2008 - could this be the cause? Would forcing Windows servers to use SMB v1 instead of v2 fix the problem and would doing this have any other effects that we might not want? Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Any other tips/advice?
