Is there a way to have the footer in a Word doc display the contents of the most recent 'heading'? That is, if I'm doing an outline and i have Heading 1 = Macs, Heading 2 = PCs, Heading 3 = UNIX.... and I would like all the pages that relate to Heading 1 have 'Macs' in the footer and then automatically change when I creating Heading 2 (that is, the footer would automatically display PCs)?
 
Insert a section break between each 'heading' and apply a heading style to the Chapter title (your "outline heading") you can then insert a reference to the heading in the footer definition and that will apply throughout the section.
Not exactly what you wanted to do, but looks the same in the end.
