Email Attachments Corrupted?

My friend is sending me email with attachments e.g. jpeg or pdf files but they appear unreadable when I receive them. I get error messages on opening the attachment:

File Error.

Couldn't open the file . It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognise

We are both using Macs running OS X 10.3 and using the Mail cilent. Surely it can't be an applications incompatibility? Could it be a problem with his ISP mail server (Comcast)? Could it be an MTU problem?

We can exchange attachments the other way round i.e. me to him with no problems
 
Files do get corrupted over email sometimes. Just get him to zip the files, they will definetly get to you ok then.
