Erasing a Dead Hard drive

The hard drive in my 1.5 GHz Powerbook totally died before I had a chance to zero it out; the PB is going in for a HD replacement under warranty. I can't use the installation disk to erase the HD because when booting from it holding the "C" key down, none of the functions in Disk Utility, such as erase, are usable. The tabs for those functions are grayed out. Even the OS installation function can't be used because the HD icon doesn't appear.
Is there any way to erase/obliterate the data on the HD before sending in my PB?
Would a bulk videotape demagnetizer work to delete or scramble any data on it?

if the hd died, what are you worried about? if it really has crashed that way, the only way to get the info off it is with really expenive equipment, which means opening the hd and placing the platers in a case made just to pull the info off. and needs to be done in a perfect clean room. now if you had stuff that you shouldn't have had, well too bad.
