Help w/ optimizing monitor settings

My Mac's monitor at work (one of those teal ones that came with G3s) was starting to go bad so I've replaced it with a ViewSonic G220fb monitor. I've got it hooked up and everything's working well except things look "greyer" and blander now. The Dock in particular looks washed out, colors in general don't seem very vibrant, and whites look too "burned" in (not enough detail).

I know it's a vague request, but can someone help me with optimal settings? I've played around with the brightness and contrast but so far the "greyness" remains. Also tried the RGB values to no effect so far.

Have a go at calibrating from the system preferences, you should be able to tweak it just how you like. Click on displays then colour and there is a calibrate button.
