How to display subtitles on DVD movie? Please help

Hello,
I bought a DVD that doesn't have English subtitles. Luckily I found subtitles for the movie on the Internet, but can't figure out how to get the DVD player to display them. I've tried both VLC and MPlayer. VLC works for a few minutes but then the subtitles disappear. MPlayer does not work at all, though I downloaded the version that should be compatible with Mac. Could someone please help me? The subtitles are an .srt file and the movie is on a regular DVD with copyrights. I was really hoping to see this movie and getting desperate, so any ideas would be warmly welcomed!
 
may or may not work since you've downloaded the subtitle separately. Usually if you download a movie depending on the ripper, they'll include the subtitle with the file so .avi + .srt +.sub these are the three file that are needed for it to play with subtitle
 
I know, the problem is I haven't downloaded the movie, it's on a DVD.
Does anyone have any ideas, for example on another media player I could try?
