iMac CPU fan running at max speed

I have an iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.5.8. Yesterday when I brought the machine out of sleep, the CPU fan began running full blast. iStat Pro clocked it at 3890 rpm. (Normally it runs about 1200 rpm.) All other readings, include the CPU temperature, were normal.

After searching some other Mac forums, I cleaned dust from the air vent and then unplugged the machine completely for about 30 minutes. When I restarted, the CPU fan was at its normal speed, and I used the machine for the rest of the evening without incident.

But when I started up the iMac this morning, the fan immediately went back to 3800+ rpm. Again, all other fans and temperature readings were normal. Again I unplugged the machine completely for several minutes, and on the restart the fan was normal. But I don't know for how long. Any suggestions?
