Internal Modem gone in Network?

Well it's not gone, it's greyed out and built in ethernet is all that is available. I have tried deleting the prefs and replacing the modem ".kext" file, but nothing worked. I do have FaxSTF X installed, but cannot find any problems with it. Any one have any ideas? I can no longer stand OS 9, I keep dropping the mouse to the bottom of the screen to switch apps. This problem is on the iMac DV+ listed in my sig. Thanks for any help
 
I've been X 99.5% since 10.0. I haven't updated to 10.1.4 yet, I tried to download it from apple, but I got a 404 error. It just did it out of the blue. I'm lost, and hoping it can be done without a reinstall as I just did that less than a week ago.
