ipod for mac & win

so does anyone know why i can't have my ipod work for both mac & win without "reformatting" or whatever? that sucks. it would be cool to be able to take my ipod to my friends place and play the tracks through his itunes on windows. does anyone know if this has changed for the new ipods (4g)?

windows cant read hfs+ filesystems (aka any mac hard drive, ipods included)

also ipods dont work like that anyway, you cant just plug it in and get the music off of it. his itunes would just erase your songs and start syncing to his library.

i may be wrong (probably), but i thought you could plug your ipod into someone else's mac and it won't sync up because it's not "their" ipod. and you could then access your songs through itunes and play them.

oh, and does that mean that a win formatted ipod uses fat or ntfs?
