Transfering mail to new computer

I bought my wife a minimac running 10.4.7. I cannot transfer her mail from her old iMac G3 500mhz running OS 10.3. I have copied the mail folder from the library to a thumb drive and then replaced the mail folder in the library in her new computer and no messages show up even though the transfered folder has 230+
MB's of data, I have read and reread the help articles

Once you have set up the new mail accounts the same as the ones from the old mac you need to rebuild each mailbox.

Highlight the mailbox you want to rebuild first and select 'Mailbox' from the top menu in mail. Then select 'Rebuild' from the options given (it is right at the bottom).

Mail should start to rebuild your mailbox. Go to each mailbox you want to rebuild and repeat the process.

The issue may be the version difference too.

Have yo utried to start the 'older' machine in firewire mode only (Comand T on boot)...then use the mail import program to pull the data in?
