Networking stops daily!

One of my Macs, running 10.4.7, started behaving strangely a few of days ago. At least once a day, at random times, networking just stops.

System Preferences -> Network contains the expected values and claims to be up and running. But the machine cannot contact any other node on my internal network, nor anything beyond. And other machines cannot contact it.

If I restart the machine, all is well again until the next time. So far as I can tell, other local software is behaving normally.

I have looked at the logs but have not yet spotted any weird events.

Does anyone have any advice on where to look? For the time being, is there a way to stop/start networking without restarting the machine?

what kind of network?

macs to windows servers?
all Macs?

What protocols?
If windows, do you authenticate with the Windows Server?

What version of Windows Server?

My network consists of Macs with a Mac server, ethernet switch, router - no Windows nonsense. All other machines are working fine.

I don't need a full restart to bring back networking.

$ ifconfig en0 # says it is up
$ ifconfig en0 down
$ ifconfig en0 up

Now it works again. The question remains: Why does it stop working?

Other macs on my network, running 10.4.7, do not have this problem?
