No destination disk, panther install

My friend has just bought a copy of panther and is trying to install. On inserting disk one, the computer restarts and goes through the various screens but when it gets to the destination disk select screen, there is no disk to select.

The machine is an ibook G3 running OS 10.1.5.

We thought it could be upgraded straight over the old system but I've never known a problem like this before.

My friend has only been in touch by email so I haven't seen the machine, just a description of the problem, there is about 14gig free.

Does it need a format or is there something which has been overlooked?

It could be that it needs a firmware update before the install. Have the friend check this web site: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
and follow the directions. You need to have OS 9 installed for this.

Is friend doing an archive and preserve? 14 GB might not be enough room for the installation process. Cleaning up the drive by trashing the unneeded downloads and old emails will help.
