Performance slowing, frustating, and more spinning lollipop of death

I've noticed it takes a little longer to start apps, click on menu items, and normal actions like navigating through programs sometimes stalls for a short period of time - ex: the most recent problem was Photoshop taking about 5-7 seconds to respond when clicking on a tool. My system will usually catch back up with me after a few seconds. But these problems have just gradually began to happen over the last few weeks. I haven't installed any new apps except for the normal system updates.

I've also noticed from time to time that my cursor will not highlight items that it rolls over as well. Ex: rolling my mouse over links on a website, or even navigating through the menu bar in OSX - nothing highlights and instead, I have to click and hold to activate drop downs or right pointing arrows. You know how your black arrow will turn into a hand with the pointed finger when you roll over a link or menu item? Yeah mine doesn't do that. When I restart my system, this fixes the cursor problem, but comes back within 10 minutes or so. *Very frustrating.

Are there any routine checks or scans I can do to help the problem? Any thing else you guys recommend? Thanks for the help!

let's see for the past 5+ years I've experienced this problem -- never had it til upgrading from 10.3.9 to 10.4.

It's gone from bad to worse. I wish I could say it gets better but that would be a lie.

there are bugs that have existed from 10.1 that simply have never been fixed ... apple would rather market to new buyers than fix the crap that has been around for the past 8 years.

you tell me.

Look at Console application to see what happens when the Mac misbehaves. Console log and system log in it will get errors generated when something doesn't work.
Post if it's incomprensible lines in it.

And run the usual maintenance such as OnyX.

joshuatree, I've only once done the 'upgrade' option on my own Macs instead of doing a full clean install. That was from 10.1.5 to 10.2, and Finder was as inexistent as free included open source software installations in a vanilla installation of Windows Vista.
Clean start is better - backup, do the clean install, bring only what you need.

Thanks G, I installed Onyx, and before I could start doing maintenance I noticed the problems with the menu bars started to happen again --> cursor doesn't highlight items it rolls over, including sub menus, I have to click and hold them, rollovers don't act normally on websites as well.

I opened Console as you mentioned and these were the logs over the last few minutes. Can you make any sense of them? Thanks for the help, I'll continue with Onyx maintenance:

Do you have VirtualPC installed on that system? Or was it imported from a previous system?
/Library/Plug-ins/DiskImages/VirtualPCDiskImagePlugin.bundle/Contents/MacOS/VirtualPCDiskImagePlugin ... is calling for that but finds plugin for wrong architecture. If there is VirtualPC, remove it - it won't run on Intel Macs anyway.
At least until 8.50 it tries to use contents of it but fails.
