preferences reset upon restart, kernel panics, etc..

I recently began having problems with my computer, programs quitting suddenly, kernel panics, etc. I checked ram and it said it was ok. I checked the hard drive and a problem was detected. Immediately after the hard drive died and I had it replaced. I thought the problem was solved, however I've started to have the same problems again. Programs, especially web browsers, unexpectedly quit and I get kernel panics and have to restart. Now when I restart all my preferences are reset when the computer restarts. The dock resets to default preferences and my desktop is the default blue-screen, not the picture I usually have. System preferences now will not let me change the desktop to anything other than the default blue-screen. I can choose the folder that contains my preferred picture, and select it as the desktop picture in the desktop preferences of the system folder, but it will not change the desktop picture. If I close and reopen system preferences, the selected folder has disappeared. I can’t even change the desktop picture to any of the other pictures that are already in the desktop preferences.

The same thing happens when I open safari, it opens with the default preferences as well. I can change the preferences, but when I close and reopen the program, the preferences have reverted to the default preferences again.

And I’m still having programs suddenly quit and I’m getting kernel panics repeatedly as well.

I did log on to my test user account and I can reset the preferences on that account and they stay reset after restart, so its just my account.

I ran Apple hardware test and everything checked out.

I reinstalled tiger this morning and I still have problems with dock and desktop pictures.

I repaired disk permissions and still have the problem.
Here's my last kernel if it helps,

I am having the EXACT same problem! I have a g4 dual 1 gig with mirrored doors running JAguar 10.2.8. I recently had my mother board replaced by apple on a recall...but it seems that the problem has gotten worse even since then . Have you figured out the solution?

I wiped the harddrive (after backing everything up) and re-installed OS 10. It seemed to help.

Where was the recall? i have the G4 with the mirrored doors.

I only found out about the "known issue" as they call it, when I was on the phone with tech support. The support person mentioned that there was a known problem with the motherboard making the fan run too high and they would fix it for free. So they did. But now (exactly at this moment)I would say my fan is running louder than ever before (wow, this issue just cropped up this morning).
that was back when I had apple care. Now it's expired and I guess I'm screwed.
