RAID Sets

Hi,

I'm configuring my first Xserve with a RAID card.

From the factory, there are three drives installed, 2 x 1TB and 1 x 240GB

In RAID utility, there are 3 RAID sets. I believe this is the default factory configuration.

I've migrated RAID set 2 and 3 so as to conform with RAID 1. This is all fine.

The 240GB drive, the boot volume, remains part of RAID set 1.

However I do not expect to utilise RAID for this drive. I know I should, but I'm out of discs for now. I'll clone the drive to an external disc for the time being.

My question is, if I'm not using RAID on this disc, should I remove it from RAID set 1 and delete this RAID set? There is mention in the RAID Utility manual of removing the boot volume from a RAID set.

I haven't encountered this before.

Appreciate any thoughts.

I would think, if you don't want it to be part of a RAID set, it should be removed. IIRC, the Xserves ship with just three independent volumes; you need to configure the RAID yourself. Usually when I get an Xserve with the RAID card, I erase all of the volumes anyway, build my RAID set(s) and re-install the OS without the extraneous parts that are not needed for my purpose.
