RAIDed Time Machine Volume -- Good Idea?

I have a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard.
I would like to do the following, and am wondering if this is a good idea...

2GB Internal Drive = Operating System
and...
2GB Internal Drive + 2GB Internal Drive (Striped RAID) = 4GB = Time Machine.

(This is a total of three drives, one containing the OS, and the other two being RAIDed together into one 4GB drive for Time Machine.)

My question is this: If my OS drive were to fail completely and I had to replace it, would I be able to restore to a new replacement drive from the 4GB Time Machine backup, or would the OS, once it is reinstalled on the new replacement drive, not see the other two drives as a single volume containing my Time Machine backup?

Forgive the question if it seems like I have no idea how RAID actually works at a low level. I don't. Is the information that tells the OS that the RAID set is, in fact, a RAID set stored on the OS volume and will it basically be lost if that volume dies? I hope that makes sense. :)

Thanks for your help. I don't want to buy three 2GB drives before I know, for sure, that this will actually work for restoring if I were to lose the main volume. If this won't work... I need to figure something else out.
