Reinstalling OSX and OS9

Having been a long-time PC user, I'm used to the notion of needing to start again from scratch if I want to re-install Windows.

Now I've got a Mac, and I'm having all sorts of problems with OS9 (which is on the same partition as OSX).

If I reinstall it will I:

a) Trash OSX and its applications?
b) Lose all my data.

Would the same apply if I tried to reinstall OSX?

Is it a good idea to back-up my stuff anyway?

Any help would be appreciated as I'm a newcomer to Mac system administration!

It is always a good idea to back up your stuff!!!
As for OS 9, reinstall it but use the "Clean Reinstallation" option when you do. This will create a new 9 System Folder. You can then add your specific preferences, extensions and control panels to it from your original System Folder.

Thanks. Silly question, really

But, from what you're saying, reinstallation of OS9 can be done relative safely. Back-up is a wise precaution, rather than an absolute necessity?
