My macook Pro 17 - 2.33 is running veeeeery slow.

even whilst typing this out, there is a delay with the cursor and scrolling this page is slow too.

I'm running a 30" cinema display, adn at the moment, the fans are going, I'm only using :

Safari
MS word 2004
Entourage 2004
Skype
Suitcase Fusion

I have 148.73 GB capacity HD with 52.27GB available
3GB of Ram

Positioned on irain's ilap aluminum stand.

has anyone any ideas as to what might be causing this lag in performance? and the damn fans?

Try opening Activity Manager in /applications/utilities to see what's taking the most CPU. You may have to select "all processes", the default is to just view yours. Then, see what is using the most memory/cpu.
Office 2004 is not a UB, so it might be slower, but shouldn't be too slow.

Spotlight can cause a big slowdown when you give it a new drive.

ah I see, so if I connect a hard drive I haven't connected for a week that could be it? is there any way of stopping it?

Yes, you can see if spotlight is indexing because it will have a circling thing going on in the icon. It should only need to index once. You can stop by by dragging the hard drive to the privacy tab. What applications/processes show up in Activity Manager as hogs?
