superdrives don't burn dvd-r's, just dvd+r's?

I noticed that my mac mini won't read dvd-r's and upon inspection...with all macs under the detailed specs in the small print it says: 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) ...no where does it mention dvd-r, just dvd+r so does that mean that the superdrive won't burn dvd-r's at all, just dvd+r's? If so what an oversight on Apple's part that is IMO...

Here's the SuperDrive specs for the current Mini (and Macbook, MacBook Pro?)

Slot-loading SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW): writes DVD+R DL discs at up to 2.4x speed, writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed, writes DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs at up to 4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed

Some older Macs were DVD-R only.

oh huh...where'd you get those more detailed superdrive specs from? thanks! :) ...seems to be a problem with the drive my mac mini came with...I've googled its hardware name and other people are unable to burn dvd-r's with them as well...just dvd+r's...odd...maybe it was a limitation back in the days when the mac mini 1.66ghz was the top mac mini (which is when my mac mini was purchased...it's the 1.66ghz one)? thanks again! :)

that problem is reported at the following places...

http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/imacintel/topic3839.html

or perhaps it's just really picky and doesn't like my brand of dvd: http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache...TSHITA+DVD-R+UJ-846"&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us ...seems like even with the good expensive media if you're lucky it'll burn at 2x max

oh and my superdrive is a MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846

click on the apple icon, then "About this Mac" in the resulting window, click "More Info..." From there, click "disk burning". Here's what I see:

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E:

Firmware Revision: DMP2
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: No

yes same here...and so do the others in those links but it still gives them and me trouble...so I'm thinking that it's a really picky drive that either will refuse the brand of dvd-r you buy or will burn at 2x unless you get Apple brand dvd-r's? thanks! :)

P.S. Your drive isn't the same version as mine :)
