I just installed Tiger and was checking to see what had changed. All my apps seem to run except now when i access the terminal I can no longer use the ls command and I get an error:

ls: illegal option -- -
usage: ls [-ABCFGHLPRSTWZabcdefghiklmnopqrstuwx1] [file ...]

does the installation change anything in my profile or alter my user settings. I can use the ls command if I change to a super user.

That was the problem, for some reason it created an alias ls="ls --color " in my bash profile. It happened to a coworked also so I dont know if its an issue with the install or not. We did an upgrade not a clean install. But thanks for the help, all seems to be working now.
