Time Machine transplant?

I need to wipe the HD on my MBP and re-install OS X Leopard. Can I use Time Machine to back up my current installation, then re-install OS X, then restore my system from Time Machine?

Actually, it can be one step simpler.

Back up with Time Machine. Then, boot from the Leopard Install DVD, and there should be an option to basically reinstall the last "snapshot" of your system from the Time Machine drive.

However, this may not be a good idea depending on why you need to reinstall. If you need to reinstall because you need to resize and/or reclaim a disk partition, then all is good. If you wish to reinstall to get rid of some software problem, then all is bad. Your software problem likely got backed up as well, and reinstalling your system from the backup will restore the software problem as well.
