To Fileserver, or not to fileserver

Like any good computer nut, i have a few systems. Basically the systems i use every day are my Mac Laptop, and my Windows XP Desktop. Almost 4 or 5 times a day, probably more, i acces or move files from one system to the other. Currently, the way i do it is to just access a shared folder on one computer or the other. I have a few questions as a result. 1) Will using a box i have (linux or windows) be more efficient then constantly using shares? 2) With using a fileserver, can i use that box to share printers, scanners, or even applications (platform asside)? Also if possible i'd like to find out the bottle-necks in any form of filetransfer, be it pure network speed, or processing power. I have this idea in my head that a dedicated fileserver would be able to transfer files faster then a system just trying to pipe them through the net on a share, while running many other services. Any insights and/or links to information is much appreciated.
